</a></b></a>ellen_fremedon has started a meme, which is terribly dangerous but too tempting for me to ignore, so here:
Let's play the Hypothetical Crossover game! Name any two (or more) fandoms you know I'm familiar with*, and I will tell you how I would, hypothetically**, cross them over!
Take the meme, spread the meme, do the meme, love the meme.
*Fandoms I'm familiar with: written on AO3 (expand full list), tagged on DW, or bookmarked on Delicious. (Yes, I know, I plan to switch to Pinboard eventually. Today is not that day.)
In other news, I had a job interview that went rather well, yesterday. Good bits: I would have time to go back to school and work towards my doctorate, it seems like I would be working with good people, and it comes with a nice four-bedroom house (with a garage, very necessary in that part of the world) from which I can walk to work. Bad bits: it is in Minnesota, i.e. half a continent away from either a) my home (West Coast) or b) the place where most of my friends are now (East Coast). Minnesota also gets very cold, which I can tolerate but don't like.

First off, the story written for me is awesome, you should all read it. What You Know (The Devil in the Details Remix) is a Deep Space 9 story about the whole Sisko family dealing with the knowledge of what the Prophets did to ensure that Benjamin Sisko was born. A very haunting look at the things the show didn't consider which takes my story and amps it to the next level.
Buffy
One Who Lights the Darkness (The Bedtime Story Remix) When you're the slayer, what do you do when there's a monster under your bed? Remix of 5 Scoobies Who Didn't Curse The Darkness And On Who Lit A Candle. I love the different reactions to monsters and beds. On its own, it is a great remix. It's also a great remix concept, taking the whole Scoobies-at-night idea and giving it a twist.
Avengers
The Captain and the Man of Iron, a Saga by Thor Odinsson, beta by Loki Laufeyjarson (Steve Rogers Must Die: the In Tony Stark’s Arms Mix) The title says it all.
Buffy/Doctor Who
Watching the Watchers (the Oncoming Storm Remix) Ethan Rayne and the 9th Doctor. A storm, a Doctor, and a judicious application of chaos.
Harry Potter
About Her (Candlelight Mix) . Luna had always taken a shine to fantastic things, and Cho definitely counts as one of the most fantastic. I love the way the author writes an adult Luna, it's just pitch-perfect.
Stargate SG-1
The First Rule of Anthropology (The Missed Chances Remix). Nine years after Daniel leaves the SGC, the Stargate goes public.
Star Trek
Second Star to the Right (The Chartered Remix) Spock was drowning and Nyota didn't know how to save him.
X-Men movieverse
Homeschooling for Mutants (a Midnight's Child Remix). Magneto sets Pyro a reading assignment. Unlike past literature assignments, it turns out to be relevant to his interests. I love the way the author shows us the power of literature, and why all these people are doing what they do. This entry was originally posted at http://beatrice-otter.dreamwidth.org/223
( Top Ten Beatrice Otter fics by word count )Huh. Some things jump out at me.
4 fics from 2010, 5 from 2011, 1 from 2009. Is this because my recent stuff is better, because more people read on AO3 now than they used to, what?
4 fics are crossovers, and only two (Wanky Wormhole, Reflections in Moving Water) are in large fandoms, though several are in good-sized fandoms where lots of people know the source material even if they don't generally write much. (Pride and Prejudice, Disney Princesses, Mary Poppins, probably even Temeraire and Vorkosigan Saga fit here.) This is probably because I love crossovers, and since SG-1 ended I have been fannish in general but not consumed by any one fandom, certainly not any one large fandom.
4 are Yuletide fics, and all but one are from a ficathon of some sort--and that one is a sequel to one of the others. I'm not sure if that says more about the fact that most of my writing (well, posted writing) this last couple of years is ficathon-based, or that ficathons tend to have a built-in audience.
I wish AO3 had something like ff.net's statistics page, because it's fascinating to see things like when the hits come, and where they come from. This entry was originally posted at http://beatrice-otter.dreamwidth.org/223

I signed up for both the regular Remix and
Regular remix is due in a week. Next Sunday. And about all I've done is make a list of six or seven stories that I could remix and what angle I would take to them. Alas, the one that I really, really want to do would probably turn into another 20k word monster to do right, and I just do not have time. Well, stories are due on the 1th, but the archive doesn't open until the 22nd, which means that if worst comes to worst I can upload it unbetaed on the 16th and get it betaed and finished in that week the pinch hits are being written. It's doable. Really, it is, next week will be a lot less nuts professionally.
What else has been going on in my life. Well, the church I'm working at has 7am worship services all of Holy Week, which, gah, means I had to be at church bright-eyed and ready for the day at 6:30. I mean, they were very meaningful and added to my Lenten experience this year, but eee I am not a morning person. Then, of course, we had 7pm services for the Triduum, the Great Three Days (Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, Easter Vigil on Holy Saturday). I wish more people would come to the Triduum services, they are really profound and important, and also it's kinda meaningless to talk about Jesus being raised if he doesn't, you know, die first. And then tomorrow, there is Easter Sunday, and then I get a week or so of relatively lighter load.
I'm in two bands and taking tap lessons and really enjoying all of that.
There is still no word on any possibilities of a call.

"File-sharers, beware: By July 12, major US Internet service providers (ISPs) will voluntarily begin serving as copyright police for the entertainment industry, according to Cary Sherman, chief executive of the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). The so-called “six-strikes” plan is said to be one of the most effective anti-piracy efforts ever established in the US."
The article goes on to give details. After six notices, internet providers will decide to throttle a person's internet speed, or cut it off altogether. I don't know if they will crack down on torrents only, or if it is up to the internet provider. I get the sense it is up to the internet provider. So some people could get away with downloading non torrents, while others might get their internet service cut off. I urge you to click it and read, as we all know people who download.
No more downloading eps of your favorite shows for vidding, gifs, or fanfiction art. No more downloading screencaps possibly. I'm so sorry my friends. I don't even know if BT Guard will work to protect you, but I would google it if I were you. It is a professional service that supposedly can protect you from the invasive eyes of your internet provider.
Just, my friends, please make each other aware. Please be aware of the date JULY 12TH. Mark your calendar and double check with your internet provider by then. If you start receiving notices of downloaded activity, this is why. And your internet service could be throttled or cut off.

It was a good fic.
Well-written, well-characterized, interesting.
And I enjoyed it. But at the same time, it really, really annoyed me.
I'm sure you've all read fics like it. Characters A and B (canon ship) are married, and it is the future. They're going through the motions, both kind of depressed and not connecting, maybe actively unhappy. Character A falls for character C--maybe in an "It's a Wonderful Life" type viewing of an alternate universe, maybe some other ficcish plot device, maybe just in the normal course of events. Character A leaves Character B for Character C, and all is perfect again!
Except not, ( because you know what, that's not how it works in real life. )

With reference to Google's policy changes and how everything you do with your Google account will be tied together into their super-cauldron of information, you will probably want to clear your Google Web History out - if you turned that feature on - before month's end. After that, you won't be able to clear it, and everything you search for will be connected with your account.
To check settings and/or clear out your Web History:
1. Go to Google. If you aren't signed in already, do so.
2. In the top right-hand corner you'll find your email address or name, perhaps an icon if you have a Plus account, and a little downward facing arrow. Click on the arrow and a menu will pop up.
3. Click to 'Account Settings'. This will take you to a page called 'Accounts'. (If you have a Plus account, you might go via a Plus sign-in page.)
4. Scroll down to a section called 'Services'. Here you'll find an option called 'View, enable, or disable web history', which has a link next to it. Click on the link.
5. If you never turned web history on, you'll get a page asking if you want to turn this service on. Just click 'No Thanks' and all is good. If you did turn it on, you should have a list of your searches. At the top there is a button that says 'Remove All History'. Click this and follow the instructions which will remove all items from your Web History and pause the feature so nothing else will be added in future.
Also, you can completely remove Web History as a service from your account by clicking THIS LINK, checking the tick-box and confirming you want to remove Web History. To be safe, it is probably best to do the steps above first to remove any history that might have already been collected.
I know there must be a billion stories like this out there, but I'm drawing a blank. I want a story that a character can use as a metaphor to explain to an enemy why she's going rogue.
In other news, my laptop's keyboard sucks. The caps lock, p, and ' keys are unreliable. I have an external keyboard at work, but not at home. Since I am currently at home, this is frustrating.

I have seen so many goofs about stuff like that, it's not even funny. From pros and amateurs.
Like the ep of SG-1 where we meet Sam's new boyfriend Pete, a cop from Denver in Colorado Springs on a case, who says he flew there. It's only like an hour or two away by car.
Like the NCIS/SG-1 crossover where Gibbs et al took a helicopter to the SGC headquarters. From the Navy Yard. Now, the Navy Yard is in DC. The SGC is in Colorado Springs, which is over half a continent away. That's some helicopter. A commercial jet would have been a lot quicker.
Like the NCIS fic I just read where Gibbs' dad flew down to DC instead of driving. Stillwater's about 3.5/4 hours north of DC, and it's an hour away from the nearest airport (Scranton/Wilkes Barre); by the time you drove to the airport, got checked in, got through security, waited for the plane, flew down, got off the plane and through the airport, and then through DC traffic, it would probably be about that fast to just drive, and it would be a lot less hassle.
This is not rocket science, folks. It takes five minutes to figure out.

ACTA in a Nutshell –
What is ACTA? ACTA is the Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement. A new intellectual property enforcement treaty being negotiated by the United States, the European Community, Switzerland, and Japan, with Australia, the Republic of Korea, New Zealand, Mexico, Jordan, Morocco, Singapore, the United Arab Emirates, and Canada recently announcing that they will join in as well.
Why should you care about ACTA? Initial reports indicate that the treaty will have a very broad scope and will involve new tools targeting “Internet distribution and information technology.”
What is the goal of ACTA? Reportedly the goal is to create new legal standards of intellectual property enforcement, as well as increased international cooperation, an example of which would be an increase in information sharing between signatory countries’ law enforcement agencies.
Essential ACTA Resources -
- Read more about ACTA here: ACTA Fact Sheet
- Read the authentic version of the ACTA text as of 15 April 2011, as finalized by participating countries here: ACTA Finalized Text
- Follow the history of the treaty’s formation here: ACTA history

On a less fun note, there is a child care center attached to the place where I work. When they have a crunch, I (being low person on the totem pole) am the one who gets pulled in. Leaving work today, I got told they have had some people out sick and such and have had to do some reshuffling, and so I need to work there 7:30am-10:00am and 3:00-5:00. Oh, joy. Still, playing with kids, not the worst job in the world.
